This story is an Australian Classic. Written by Banjo Patterson over 100 years ago not even he could have anticipated the impact it would have on Australians everywhere. The movie of the Film made in 1980 staring Tom Burlinson and Sigrid Thornton ensured it's immortality on the big screen. And that music! Every time we hear Bruce Rowland's magnificent score we are immediately transported back to when we first saw that magnificent movie.
But enough about the movie.
2007 is looming and the challenge of bringing Banjo's story to the Arena has begun. Damon Phillips CEO of the Toowoomba Show Society says, "We're really excited about SNOWY. Our previous arena spectaculars have all been great shows and very well received but there is no other story in Australian Literature like this one. For a start it's the only one that I can think of with a happy ending!"
It certainly seems to be true with stories dating back to early Australian History. Ned Kelly ended in tears and the Waltzing Matilda Story although a landmark occasion for the underdog doesn't exactly end in celebration.
"Everywhere I go people ask me to produce the Snowy Arena Spectacular but it's such a hard act to follow I have steered away from it till now" Says Ozworks Entertainment Creative Mark Eady. "This is the 5th year that I've produced an arena spectacular for the Toowoomba Royal Show. The public have been so supportive we've had packed houses each night so it's time I think for the big one."
Locals are already lining up to be involved. Clint Golan will train a number of horses and dogs to star in the show as well as supply high country wild brumbies. Clint will also head the experienced riders group to represent the stories hard riding characters while Marcus Osbourne and his growing list of riders from the Toowoomba Trail Ride Club will once again be featured in a specially choriographed riding routines as townsfolk, stockmen and stockwoman.
The call is out now for Musicians i.e. mandolin, violin, guitar, piano accordian and mucisal coordinator, Whip Crackers, Feature Male and Female Singers, Riders, Singers that ride and whip crack, actors, harness vehicles, stage managers, camera opperators, dancers, choriographers and more...
